The Dutch really know how to promote and encourage the use of green transport; specifically the humble bicycle. Apart from having to use some physical energy, one of the most common arguments against hopping on a bike rather than jumping in a car is that very few cities provide ample, secure parking for such a vehicle, let alone such a facility which is also well designed.

In the Dutch city of Groningen this problem has been well and truly solved with the introduction of the Stadsbalkon, a pedestrianised area immediately outside Groningen Railway Station which forms a concrete balcony, below which sits a 4000 capacity bicycle parking facility. The project was designed by KCAP.

A great idea, beautifully executed. Another bicycle parking garage worth mentioning also happens to be located in the Netherlands, but this one has three storeys and can be found in Amsterdam. The Fietsflat...

Finally a quick nod to Japan where, unsurprisingly, machines take care of your bicycle while you shop/work. Situated outside Tokyo's Kasai Station is this robotic monster of an automated parking facility, large enough to hold 9400 bikes.
